The art of weaving silk sarees was further refined during the reign of the Vijayanagara empire, which ruled South India from the 14th to the 16th century. The Vijayanagara kings were great patrons of the arts, and they encouraged the development of weaving and other crafts in Kanchipuram. The weavers of Kanchipuram were given royal patronage, and they produced exquisite silk sarees that were highly prized by the nobility.
